Ultimate Guide to Desert Safari in Dubai

The desert safari is the experience most first-time visitors to Dubai ask about, and for good reason. Within twenty minutes of leaving the city, the towers disappear and you are surrounded by an ocean of golden sand. This guide explains how the experience works, how to choose between the packages available, and how to get the most out of your evening.

What a desert safari actually involves

A safari generally begins with a transfer into the desert conservation area on the outskirts of Dubai. From there, a skilled driver takes the vehicle over the dunes — a section known as dune bashing — before stopping at a scenic point for photographs as the light softens.

As the sun goes down, the sand shifts through shades of amber and rose. Most safaris then continue to a desert camp where guests can relax in a traditional Arabian setting. The exact activities, refreshments and entertainment offered depend entirely on the package you book, which is why we always confirm these details directly before you travel.

Choosing the right package

Dubai desert safaris fall into a few broad categories, and each suits a different type of traveller:

  • Regular evening safari — the most popular and best-value option, ideal for couples, families and groups.
  • VIP evening safari — a more exclusive atmosphere with enhanced comfort, popular for special occasions.
  • Private safari car — a vehicle reserved for your group only, with the freedom to set your own pace.
  • Morning safari — cooler temperatures and beautiful soft light, ideal for families and photographers.
  • Short safari trip — a condensed version for travellers with limited time.

What to wear and bring

Light, comfortable clothing and closed shoes are best. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat, plus a light jacket or scarf for after sunset, when desert temperatures drop quickly. Fully charge your phone or bring a camera — the sunset is the part most people photograph.

Practical tips for a better experience

  • Book ahead, especially during the peak season between November and March.
  • Eat a light meal before you go if you are prone to motion sickness on the dunes.
  • Confirm pickup arrangements, timings and inclusions with your operator in advance.
  • Tell your guide if anyone in your group has back or neck problems before the dune driving begins.
  • Carry a small bag for rubbish and keep the desert clean.

Inclusions such as meals, activities, entertainment and hotel pickup vary by package and season. Please confirm the exact details with our team on WhatsApp before booking.

Morning vs Evening Desert Safari: Which Should You Choose?

Both are excellent, and both take you into the same extraordinary landscape. The difference is the time of day — and that changes almost everything about the experience. Here is how to decide.

The case for a morning desert safari

Morning safaris are calm, cool and quiet. The sand is softer and the light is low and directional, which makes it the best time of day for photography. Temperatures are far more comfortable, especially in summer, which makes it the obvious choice for families with young children or older travellers.

The trade-off is that you miss the sunset — and the desert at dawn, while beautiful, does not have the dramatic colour of late afternoon.

The case for an evening desert safari

Evening safaris are built around sunset, and sunset in the Dubai desert is the reason most people book. As the sun drops, the dunes turn gold, then deep amber, then rose, and the shadows stretch across the ridges. It is genuinely spectacular.

Evening safaris also tend to offer a fuller overall experience, including more time at a desert camp and a livelier atmosphere. The downside is that temperatures can be high earlier in the afternoon, and it is a longer commitment overall.

How to decide

  • Choose a morning safari if you have young children, dislike heat, are a keen photographer, or have an evening already planned.
  • Choose an evening safari if this is your first desert experience, you want the classic sunset, or you are looking for a livelier, fuller evening out.
  • If you have time for both, do both — they feel like two completely different deserts.

One more consideration: the season

Between roughly May and September, daytime desert temperatures can be extreme. During these months a morning safari is far more comfortable, and evening safaris are best booked with realistic expectations about the afternoon heat. From October to April, both options are pleasant.

Timings vary by package and season. Please confirm the exact departure and return times with our team on WhatsApp for your preferred date.

City Tours

Top Attractions to Explore on a Dubai City Tour

Dubai spreads a very long way, and its biggest attractions are not close together. A guided city tour solves that problem by grouping the sights efficiently and letting someone else deal with the driving. Here is what to prioritise.

Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa area

The centre of modern Dubai, and the part of the city that most visitors picture before they arrive. The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and the surrounding district — with its water features, plazas and the Dubai Fountain — is worth unhurried time.

The Burj Al Arab

The sail-shaped hotel on its own island is one of the most recognisable buildings on earth. Even if you are not staying there, the approach road gives one of the best photo opportunities in the city, particularly around sunset.

Dubai Marina and JBR

A completely different atmosphere: a canal lined with towers, a long waterfront promenade, restaurants and beaches. This is where many visitors spend their evenings, and it is also the departure area for Marina dinner cruises.

Old Dubai and the creek

For a sense of how the city began, the historic quarters around Dubai Creek are essential. Traditional souks, older architecture and abras crossing the water give context to everything else you will see.

Abu Dhabi: worth the drive

If you have a full day, Abu Dhabi rewards the journey. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most beautiful buildings in the region, and the corniche offers a very different perspective on the UAE.

How to plan your day

  • A half-day tour covers the headline modern landmarks.
  • A full-day tour adds old Dubai and a broader mix of districts.
  • Abu Dhabi needs its own full day — do not try to combine it with a Dubai tour.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry water; you will be outside more than you expect.

Entry tickets to individual attractions are not automatically included in city tours and are confirmed with you on WhatsApp before booking.

Dubai Marina Cruise Dinner: What to Expect

A dinner cruise is one of the most relaxing evenings Dubai has to offer. You are on the water, the city is lit up around you, and there is nothing to navigate or plan. Here is what the experience involves and how to pick the right cruise.

The setting

Dubai Marina is a canal district lined with tall residential towers. After sunset the whole area changes character — thousands of windows illuminate, the promenades fill with people, and the water becomes a mirror for the skyline. Seeing it from a boat is the best way to take it all in.

Traditional dhow cruises

The most authentic option, and usually the best value. Traditional dhow-style boats offer a wooden-deck, Arabian atmosphere and a slower pace. They are popular with couples and families who want the classic experience rather than a modern party boat.

Modern cruise vessels

Larger, more contemporary cruises offer more space, better facilities and a more polished service. If comfort and views from an upper deck matter to you, this is the direction to go.

Choosing between the options

  • Traditional Marina Cruise Dinner — the classic dhow experience at the best value.
  • Marina Cruise Dinner (4 Star) — more comfort and space on a modern vessel.
  • Goldfish Cruise Dinner (5 Star) — premium service for a special night out.
  • Luxury Lotus Cruise Dinner — our most exclusive option, for milestones and celebrations.

Questions worth asking before you book

Menus, cruise duration, boarding location and live entertainment all vary between vessels and operators. Rather than guess, ask your operator directly — a good one will tell you clearly what is and is not included.

When to go

Evening is the only time that makes sense for a dinner cruise; the whole point is the skyline after dark. Booking a day or two ahead is wise during the peak season, and a light jacket is useful on the open deck even in warm months.

Buffet menus, cruise durations, boarding points and entertainment are confirmed with you on WhatsApp before your booking is finalised.

Adventure

Quad Bike and Dune Buggy Adventures in Dubai

If watching the desert from a vehicle is not enough, the next step is to drive yourself. Quad bikes and dune buggies are two of the most popular adventure activities in Dubai, and both are accessible to complete beginners.

Quad bikes: light, responsive and easy to learn

A quad bike is a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle you straddle like a motorcycle. They are light and forgiving, which makes them a great first choice if you have never ridden off-road before. Most riders are comfortable with the controls within a few minutes of the safety briefing.

Dune buggies: more power, more stability

Dune buggies are larger, sit you in a seat rather than on the bike, and have a wider track that handles soft sand with confidence. They are faster and more stable, which makes them popular with groups who want to cover more ground and ride together.

What the first ride feels like

You begin with a briefing covering the controls, braking and how to handle the bike on sand. You then ride in a guided convoy following a lead driver. Expect to climb gentle slopes at first and build up to steeper dunes as your confidence grows. There are regular stops for photographs and water.

Safety essentials

  • Never skip the pre-ride safety briefing, even if you have ridden before.
  • Wear closed shoes, long trousers and sunglasses.
  • Wear your helmet and any provided safety equipment at all times.
  • Stay within your group and keep a safe distance from other riders.
  • Ride at a speed you are genuinely comfortable with.
  • Tell the operator about any injuries, medical conditions or concerns before you ride.

Who can take part

Minimum ages, licence requirements and equipment rules vary by operator and bike type. We confirm these details with you on WhatsApp before booking so there are no surprises on the day.

Turquoise water and mountain scenery on the Khorfakkan coast
Scenic Escapes

Exploring Hatta and Khorfakkan: UAE Scenic Escapes

Most visitors arrive expecting nothing but desert. The UAE's mountains and coastline come as a genuine surprise. Hatta and Khorfakkan are the two best day trips for seeing that other side of the country.

Hatta: mountains, wadis and turquoise water

Hatta sits in the Hajar Mountains on the eastern edge of Dubai. The drive alone is worth it — the road climbs through rocky terrain with a view around every bend. At the end of it you find Hatta Dam, a startling expanse of turquoise water held between brown hills.

The air is noticeably cooler than the city, the pace is slow, and the landscape is completely different from anything else in the Emirates. Bring a camera.

Khorfakkan: mountains that meet the sea

Khorfakkan is an enclave of Sharjah on the Gulf of Oman, almost entirely surrounded by mountains. That geography produces something unique in the UAE: a proper sandy beach with dramatic peaks rising directly behind it.

The town is relaxed, with a long corniche along the shoreline that is perfect for a stroll. If you want sea air and scenery rather than shopping and skyscrapers, this is the day trip for you.

Planning your day trip

  • Both destinations involve a mountain drive, so start early to make the most of the daylight.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen, sunglasses and water.
  • Carry a light layer — mountain and coastal areas are cooler than the city.
  • If you want to swim at Khorfakkan, bring swimwear and a towel.
  • Check whether combining both in one day is realistic before you plan it.

What to confirm before booking

Specific stops, activity options and entry to any paid attractions are not automatically included in these tours. Always confirm the current itinerary and inclusions with your operator before travelling.
